A Maldivian woman has successfully won the Council Election of Hutt City in New Zealand.

Shazly Rasheed competed for the Hutt City Council, which has over a 100,000 residents.

"I’m so humbled by your love Lower Hutt. I am so blown away with the amount of votes I got. I look forward to working hard for Lower Hutt," she said in a Facebook post.

She also noted that among all candidates who competed, she had gained the fourth highest number of votes.

Explaining her vision, she had previously said that it is for a thriving city where businesses want to invest and create job opportunities.

She wants Lower Hutt to be safe, friendly and inclusive, the best place to bring up families and run a business.
