President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday submitted Former High Court Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Former Civil Court Judge Aisha Shujune's name to the Parliament, to be appointed to the Supreme Court bench.

Chief Communications Strategist at the President's Office, Ibrahim Hoodh confirmed that the President had submitted their names to the parliament.

Their names were sent to the Parliament after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) consulted President Solih to appoint the two to the Supreme Court bench.

The President can only appoint a judge to a court after consulting with the JSC and securing a majority vote through the Parliament.

While President Solih nominated two female judges to the top court, difference of opinion on the topic is being observed between religious scholars.
