The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has consulted President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to appoint former High Court Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Former Civil Court Judge Aisha Shujune to the Supreme Court bench.

As per Article 148 of the Constitution of Maldives, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih nominated Dr. Azmiralda and Shujune to the top court, and sent the names to the JSC for a consultation last Thursday.

JSC said on Monday that they decided to consult the President to appoint the two female judges to the Supreme Court in reference to the report prepared by them after researching on the names nominated by the President as well as those who had applied for it.

They have since shared their decision with the President.

While President Solih nominated two female judges to the top court, difference of opinion on the topic is being observed between religious scholars.
