Maldives Police Service (MPS) has begun an operation to take actions against taxi drivers who charge more than the fare set by the Transport Ministry.
Police confirmed on Tuesday that they have begun the operation to take action against drivers who violate the recent revision to the taxi guidelines.
In the operation, Police will check whether drivers are abiding by the recent revision to the taxi guideline, whether the cars are in accordance to road worthiness and whether the cars are older than 20 years from the date of manufacture.
While Police have begun their operation to regulate taxi fares in accordance to the new guideline which comes into effect tomorrow, the Transport Ministry had previously noted that they will take action against any driver who charges beyond the fare set by the Ministry.
With the new guideline, Taxis in the region will have to charge MVR 60 per ride from Male' to Hulhule' and Hulhumale' to Hulhule'. MVR 75 was set as the fair for rides between Male' and Hulhumale'. No extra charges are set for luggage or rides after midnight between dawn.
