An emergency motion has been filed at the parliament for discussion after the Criminal Court did not issue the order to detain the former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor after he left the country while his passport was withheld.

Adeeb was brought back to the country last night and was taken to the Criminal Court where a judge freed him. Concerns regarding the matter are now up for discussion at the parliament following the emergency motion.

The motion was filed by the MP for Hulhumeedhoo constituency, Ilyas Labeeb.

Presenting the motion, Labeeb said that the biggest accusation of the largest case of corruption falls on Adeeb. And he is also suspected to be involved in the major criminal cases in the past three years. He also noted to Adeeb was sentenced to 33 years in prison before he was freed.

MP Labeeb raised concern since the Criminal Court released Adeeb when he was taken to court after being brought to the country last night.

He said that a person like Adeeb who has stolen MVR 1.3 billion from the people being free is not something that should be done and it needs to be brought to the attention of the government and make it a priority.

When the motion was asked for debate, 34 of 64 MPs present voted to proceed with debate.

After being brought back to the country, the court initially released Adeeb stating that the arrest was outside international laws. However, a second arrest warrant was issued hours around 5:30 a.m. later for leaving the country while his passport was frozen.
