Judicial Service Commission (JSC) member and Thulhadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain has said that someone should clarify to former President Abdulla Yameen that complaints regarding lawyers should now be submitted to the Bar Council instead of the Supreme Court.
Hisaan made the statement while retweeting a tweet about President Yameen submitting a case to the Supreme Court alleging that the lawyer in his money laundering trial, Aishath Mohamed had disrespected the court during the trial.
"Perhaps someone should clarify to [President] Yameen that complaints regarding lawyers should now be submitted to the Bar Council and not to the Supreme Court," Hisaan said in her tweet.
Even though the court had been overseeing issues related to lawyers, the ratification of the Legal Profession Bill effectively gave the power to the newly formed Bar Council. The Bill was ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on June 27.
Under the act, all things related to lawyers will be overseen by the Bar Council. This includes; investigating lawyers, suspending them and withholding their license, training them and issuing new permits as well.
Confirming that the case of lawyer Aishath Mohamed was submitted to the Supreme Court, President Yameen's lawyer Abdulla Shiyaz told 'One Online' that the case was submitted not as a disciplinary issue. It was simply submitted to the Supreme Court for disrespecting the court, and was submitted sometime last week.
