Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed has called on Maldivians to stand on their own feet rather than remain under the influence of any foreign power, stressing the importance of prioritising national interests over personal interests.
Speaking at the official Victory Day ceremony at Republic Square tonight, the Minister said Maldivians must take responsibility for their own affairs, placing religion and national interests first.
He noted that the global security landscape is undergoing significant changes, exposing countries to various threats. He said the Maldives is the oldest independent state in the region, a reality Maldivians should recognise.
The Minister said the Maldives’ history of independence is rooted in the unity of its people under the guidance of Islam. He added that Victory Day serves as a reminder of the need to prioritise national interests, following the example set by previous generations.
Highlighting the country’s defence policy, Hassan said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s approach focuses on safeguarding Maldivian independence and sovereignty through national capabilities, without relying on external powers.
He said efforts to strengthen the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) include training personnel for land, sea and air operations and equipping them with modern resources.
