Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has shifted full container load (FCL) cargo clearance operations to the Thilafushi Cargo Terminal (TCT), with services commencing today.

The service has started at a newly constructed 100-metre quay wall developed by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The move is the first operational transfer under the project to relocate Malé’s commercial port to Thilafushi.

MPL initially introduced direct delivery (DR) services for FCL containers, including cargo clearance and the return of empty containers. However, food items and medicines will continue to be cleared through Malé Commercial Harbour and Hulhumalé International Terminal.

MPL said the relocation of most FCL clearance operations would ease pressure on local quay operations at Hulhumalé International Terminal.

MPL Chief Executive Officer Captain Hussain Shafeeq acknowledged the efforts of staff and the support of Maldives Customs Service and the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade in facilitating the transition.

He also said less than container load (LCL) cargo clearance services would be introduced at Thilafushi in the coming phase.

The wider port relocation project includes a 375-metre international quay wall, with completion targeted for July next year. The new port is planned to handle 390,000 TEUs annually at its initial opening, with capacity expected to increase to 1.8 million TEUs upon full completion.

The first phase is scheduled to open on 11 November next year. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the new port is expected to be four times larger than the existing port in Malé.
