Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated today that tax revenue received by the state is used to pay off debt and revive the country's economy.

The Speaker made these remarks while responding to questions raised by opposition members during the debate on the bill to amend the Tax Administration Act submitted by the government to the People's Majlis today, where they questioned what is actually done with the tax money collected by the state through increased taxes.

Opposition MDP members repeatedly questioned the chair, stating that although state revenue from increased taxes is growing, obtaining healthcare, medicines, and US dollars has not become easier as promised by the government. They repeatedly asked the chair what is being done with the state's funds while development projects started in the islands remain stalled and halted.

In response, the Speaker stated that different individuals do different things when they acquire funds.

In that regard, he noted that what some individuals do is expand their own pockets and enrich their personal companies.

He further stated that what others are doing is rescuing the country that was driven to bankruptcy by those who acted in that manner, reviving the economy, and paying off debts.

"That is what is actually done with that money. Because things were done in that direction with that money, today we have a country that is safe. That is what this government does by raising tax money for the people and the nation," the Speaker of Parliament said.
