The Government has proposed amendments to the Penal Code to criminalise treason against the Maldivian State, alongside other changes to strengthen penalties for certain offences.

The bill, submitted by Maafannu South MP Abdullah Rifau (Bochey) on behalf of the Government, seeks to criminalise genocide in line with the Genocide Convention, acts of treason and conduct that threatens the country’s economic security. It also proposes tougher penalties for offences against Islam.

Under the proposed amendments, waging war against the Maldives, joining forces with parties fighting against the country, or assisting its enemies domestically or abroad would constitute treason.

The offences would be classified as first-degree felonies. Those convicted would face imprisonment and be permanently barred from appointment to senior State positions.

The bill defines the Maldives’ enemies as foreign parties and Maldivians who engage in acts that threaten the country’s independence and sovereignty.

The bill has been scheduled for debate at tomorrow’s parliamentary sitting.
