Dhiraagu has partnered with Soneva Conservation and Sustainability Maldives (Soneva CSM) to support the “Dhirun Community Coral Regeneration Programme” in Baa Dharavandhoo.

Under the partnership, Dhiraagu will provide support for the programme, which is being carried out with the support of local community organisation Muraka Farm.

The programme will provide practical coral restoration training for students, businesses and community members, based on modern research and science. A community Muraka nursery capable of accommodating 30 to 50 nursery structures will also be established.

Dharavandhoo’s reefs are an important resource for the island’s tourism, fisheries and community. The island is located near Hanifaru Bay and within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Dhiraagu said the initiative aims to strengthen community involvement in marine conservation and provide skills and knowledge needed to protect coral reefs for future generations.

Soneva CSM Director of Operations Dr Johanna Leonhardt said lasting conservation results can be achieved by building the necessary knowledge and skills within communities.

The programme will also include awareness activities and practical coral restoration work, with a special festival planned in Dharavandhoo towards the end of this year.
