Maldivian has officially opened its new seaplane terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), featuring expanded facilities and enhanced services for passengers.

The terminal was inaugurated today by Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen. The upgrade is the largest renovation of the terminal since Maldivian began seaplane operations.

The project has expanded and refurbished more than 15,000 square feet of space, including the Huvaandhuma Lounge, which has doubled in size. Dedicated services have also been introduced for premium and VIP passengers, offering greater privacy and comfort. A new boarding gate allows VIP passengers to board seaplanes directly from the lounge.

The upgraded terminal also features a new outdoor area with seating, a mini golf facility and views of the sea and seaplanes. Other additions include a children’s corner, a shop selling Maldivian products and a staff canteen. The terminal’s exterior has been upgraded with new cladding, while modern decking has been installed from the boarding gates to the seaplane jetty. A feature wall reflecting Maldivian culture has also been added to the main entrance.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said the upgrade was part of the company’s efforts to improve passenger services, modernise its fleet and support the development of the tourism and transport sectors.

Last month, Maldivian signed an agreement with Canadian aircraft manufacturer De Havilland Aircraft Company to purchase two new-generation DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft. The acquisition will make Maldivian the first airline in the Maldives to operate the aircraft model.

Maldivian said the terminal upgrade supports the Government’s efforts to strengthen seaplane services and reflects the national airline’s commitment to the tourism industry.
