China will support the Maldives in further diversifying and expanding its economy by combining Chinese technology with the Maldives’ natural resources, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua has said.

Speaking at an event held to commemorate China’s 77th National Day, Ambassador Kong said China would continue supporting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision for advancing the Maldivian economy.

He said the two countries could achieve significant progress by modernising fisheries and agriculture and expanding tourism.

Ambassador Kong said combining China’s expertise in technology, capital and management with the Maldives’ natural resources and skilled workforce could help expand the blue economy, strengthen green development and accelerate the country’s digital future.

He also said projects carried out with Chinese grant assistance would not add to the Maldives’ debt burden.

The ambassador said practical work on the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital and road development in Malé and Vilimalé is expected to begin towards the end of this year or early next year. Permits for the construction of council offices across the islands are also expected to be completed before the end of this year.

Regarding the Sinamalé Bridge, Ambassador Kong said engineering assessments following an accident on the bridge had confirmed its safety, adding that Chinese engineers would continue supporting Maldivian engineers in maintaining the bridge.

He said more than 280,000 Chinese tourists had visited the Maldives as of 15 September. He also announced that the China-Maldives Investment Cooperation Forum will be held in October to strengthen trade and investment between the two countries.
