The Local Government Authority (LGA) has instructed councils to obtain written approval before hiring new employees.

In letters sent to councils, LGA Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Nimal said the requirement applies to appointments funded through both the government budget and council revenue.

The LGA said approval must also be obtained before recruiting for newly created or vacant permanent positions, as well as contract and wage-based employment for specific periods or tasks.

The authority added that councils must obtain its approval before advertising any paid position, including contract, wage and consultancy jobs.
