Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has denied claims that the commercial port being developed in Thilafushi has been sold to an Indian company.

In a post on X, Minister Saeed said the Thilafushi international commercial port would remain 100 per cent owned by Maldivians and would become one of the country’s most valuable national assets.

He was responding to claims made by former President Abdulla Yameen at a PPM meeting that the port could be sold to an Indian company, raising concerns over national sovereignty.

Minister Saeed urged the public not to spread false information about the project, describing the Thilafushi port as one of the largest and most beneficial projects to be completed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s first term.

The port is being developed as a modern, state-of-the-art facility to address space constraints at Malé’s commercial port. It is scheduled to open on 11 November next year.

Under the relocation project, around 80 per cent of port operations will be moved from Malé to Thilafushi.
