President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the progress of the Thilamalé Bridge project demonstrates the Government’s commitment to completing major development projects at an accelerated pace.

The President made the remarks today during a visit to the project site, where he reviewed ongoing work to connect Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi. Construction Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Cabinet members and Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian also attended the visit.

President Dr Muizzu said the Malé-Vilimalé section of the project has been completed and highlighted the importance of the bridge as a symbol of the modern and close ties between the Maldives and India.

He said the Government would continue to prioritise the rapid completion of major development projects, including those being implemented with the assistance of the Indian Government.

The President said completing the Thilamalé Bridge would bring significant economic benefits and opportunities to the Malé region. He also noted that terminal development at Velana International Airport and Hanimaadhoo International Airport is progressing rapidly.

The project was 30 per cent complete when the previous administration ended. Following efforts by the current Government in collaboration with the Indian Government and the contractor, progress has accelerated, with 70 per cent of the project now completed.

The 6.7-kilometre bridge project connecting Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi is being implemented with a total investment of USD 500 million, comprising USD 100 million in Indian grant assistance, a US$400 million loan and funding from the Maldivian Government.

Road development and reclamation works in Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi are also being carried out as part of the project.
