The number of measles cases reported in the Maldives has risen to 243 after 17 new cases were recorded in the Malé area last week, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The outbreak has now continued for more than three months. Although the Maldives was declared to have eliminated measles in 2017, cases have continued to be reported, with the disease now spreading among Maldivians as well as foreign residents.

The HPA said 16,045 people have so far received measles vaccinations as part of the outbreak response.

The agency has urged people who are unsure whether they have received both doses of the measles vaccine to visit designated vaccination centres and complete their vaccination. Contacts of confirmed cases who have not received both doses have also been advised to get vaccinated without delay.

The HPA has advised anyone who develops a fever and rash to seek medical attention promptly. Those tested for measles should remain isolated until their results are confirmed, while people with symptoms are advised to avoid crowded places and wear a mask when seeking medical care.
