First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for innovation to be inclusive and focused on improving people’s lives.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 9th Theveli International Conference 2026 at the Maldives National University (MNU) on Tuesday, the First Lady said meaningful innovation begins where knowledge meets curiosity and serves society.
She highlighted the potential of technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve education, healthcare and livelihoods across the atolls. She also encouraged women and girls to play an active role in science and technology.
The First Lady urged educational institutions to foster creativity and critical thinking among young people, encouraging students to become creators rather than consumers of technology.
She also called for greater collaboration between researchers, policymakers and industry to ensure research addresses real-world challenges and benefits communities.
During the ceremony, the First Lady presented the Theveli 2026 awards to their recipients.
Organised by MNU, this year's conference is held under the theme “Transformative Innovation in the 21st Century: Science, Technology, and Society.”
