An amendment has been filed at the parliament to raise the allowance given to the elderly from MVR 5,000 to MVR 10,000.

Filed as part of the amendment to the Pension Act, the amendment was filed by the MP for Kaashidhoo constituency, Abdulla Jabir.

Presenting the amendment, MP Jabir said that the elderly are valuable citizens that have worked hard for their country. And so, the purpose of the amendment is to make sure they can live a comfortable life with pride.

He said that the government will oppose such bills claiming it would be expensive. Jabir said that government continue to spend wastefully and the cost of operation has to be reduced.
