The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has stated that 17 people contracted measles within a single week.

According to statistics published by HPA today, 17 new cases were recorded over the past week, marking an increase compared to the 13 cases reported the previous week. The total number of individuals who have contracted the disease so far this year now stands at 216.

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Maldives measles-free in 2017, cases continue to be detected among foreign nationals residing in the country.

However, the current situation has escalated as the disease has also begun spreading among Maldivians. The outbreak has been spreading within the country for over two months.

Statistics show that under the vaccination program launched by HPA to control the outbreak, 14,701 people have been vaccinated so far.

HPA highlighted key measures the public should observe to halt the spread of measles:

  • Seek medical care at a hospital without delay if experiencing fever accompanied by a red rash.
  • Wear a mask and refrain from using public transportation, such as taxis or buses, if displaying symptoms.
  • Remain isolated at home until test results are available if tested for suspected infection.
  • Avoid crowded places and public gatherings if displaying symptoms of the illness.
