Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) governor Ahmed Nazeer has been summoned to the Parliament Committee on Public Accounts over the alleged money laundering that happened through the MMA, with the involvement of the governor.
The governor is being summoned to the committee in regards to a reply by the governor, after Former Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) Chief, Abdulla Ashraf had submitted a case to the committee detailing how the governor had tried to stop him from reporting the money laundering to the Police.
Former FIU Chief, Abdulla Ashraf will also be presented in front of the committee with Governor Nazeer.
The FIU is formed under a law, and is an independent unit that works on preventing corruption. According to the law, the governor could not influence the FIU in any form.
Ashraf was suddenly changed from his position as the Chief of FIU previously. He was removed from the position during a time when the FIU had reported to the Police about the large sums of money being deposited and withdrawn from the account of Former President Abdulla Yameen's account in Maldives Islamic Bank.
