Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has proposed transferring annual vehicle registration fee revenue collected in Malé City from the Malé City Council's budget to the State budget.

Responding to a question in Parliament, the minister said the council receives around MVR 150 million annually from vehicle fees collected in Malé and Hulhumalé. He argued that road maintenance is the council's responsibility, but it has failed to build the capacity to carry out the work.

Minister Muththalib said the government is often forced to repair roads damaged by utility works despite the council receiving the revenue. He proposed reallocating the funds to the State budget so the government could directly implement road improvement projects.
