Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath has said that today is a historic day for the legal profession in the Maldives due to the formation of the Bar Council.

In a tweet regarding the Bar Council election, AG Riffath said that after a long wait the first Bar Council of the Maldives will be established today.

Voting for Bar Council is taking place in Male' and Hithadhoo. Husnu Al Suood and Maumoon Hameed are contesting for the Presidency of the Bar Council while Former Civil Court Judge Mohamed Haleem and Former Attorney General Abdulla Muizz. In addition to this, 19 lawyers are also competing to become part of the executive committee of the Bar Council.

Voting closes today at 5:00pm, and counting begins thirty minutes later. While tentative results will be announced today, official results of the election will be published tomorrow.
