Former President Abdulla Yameen has said he does not believe President Dr Mohamed Muizzu would attempt to have him imprisoned ahead of the next presidential election.
Speaking at a gathering organised by the People's National Front (PNF), Yameen was responding to remarks by a supporter who claimed the Government might seek to jail him to prevent him from contesting against President Dr Muizzu.
Yameen said he was previously imprisoned under the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, claiming it was done on the advice that he could not be defeated in an election unless he was jailed.
He said he does not believe President Dr Muizzu would take similar action, even if political disagreements arise.
Yameen also said President Dr Muizzu is aware that imprisoning him would not resolve political differences or benefit the Government politically.
