The Government will work to provide more housing opportunities for families living in the Hiyaa flats in Hulhumalé, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new lifts at Hiyaa Tower 16, Muththalib said many families living in the flats now face overcrowding, with growing numbers of children making two-bedroom apartments increasingly inadequate.
He said the Government's housing policy goes beyond providing homes and aims to deliver long-term solutions that improve residents' quality of life.
"The Government will work to resolve the challenges faced by residents of these flats and provide them with opportunities for a better life," the Minister said.
Muththalib said details of the Government's plans would be announced at a later date.
He also noted that previous land allocation decisions had reduced the space available for additional services in the area, but said the Government has taken several steps over the past two years to address issues affecting residents.
The Minister added that the Government remains committed to improving the wellbeing of the approximately 2,000 people living in each Hiyaa tower.
