WhatsApp will introduce usernames, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, Meta has announced.
The new feature is designed to improve privacy by preventing phone numbers from being automatically shared when users join large group chats or message someone for the first time.
Meta said there will be no searchable username directory or suggestions, meaning people will need to know a user's exact username to contact them.
The company plans to roll out username reservations gradually worldwide over the coming months, with users being notified when the feature becomes available in their country.
Creators, small businesses and organisations will also be able to claim WhatsApp usernames that match those already used on Facebook or Instagram.
