An amendment to raise the number of judges at the Supreme Court to seven has been proposed at the parliament.

The amendment to the law of courts was proposed by the MP for Mid-Henveiru constituency, Ali Azim.

When the amendment of the Constitution took effect, the law stated that the Supreme Court must have seven judges. However, an amendment was made during the Yameen administration in 2014 reduced the number of Supreme Court Judges to five.

At the debate of the amendment to raise the number of Judges back to seven, some MPs said that Supreme Court judges are appointed for life (up to 70 years of old) according to the law and Judge Ahmed Muthasim Adnaan and then Chief Justice were forced out of the Supreme Court without the chance to defend themselves.
