President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that works were underway to transfer Maldivian women and children stuck in Syria to the Maldives, with the aid of UN and other international organisations.

President Solih made the statement while speaking to the media on Thursday.

He additionally revealed that the government had tried on multiple occasions to get in touch with Maldivians who were taking part in the war in Syria. However, none of these attempts were successful.

President Solih also highlighted that the government was working on bringing back Maldivians in dire conditions in Syria, especially women and children. He added that all international bodies have advised against releasing them into the society right away.

He stressed that those who are brought back will be first rehabilitated before being freed into the society.
