President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that after a government research is completed, those that need housing will be given it for free.

The President made the statement at an ongoing press conference, and highlighted that there are people in desperate need of housing.

President Solih added that after the research is complete, the government will provide housing to those who are in need of it without any conditions, for free.

He further added that the flats beings constructed in Hulhumale' Phase 2 under the Hiyaa Project, is funded by the government for USD 700 million. According to how they were being developed, a 2 room apartment would have cost MVR 11,000.

However, since the apartments were a mere 520 square ft, they were changed since it was not suitable to be inhabited by humans. With the changes, a three room apartment costs up to MVR 23,000 while a two room apartments costs MVR 13,000.

President Solih noted that the government was working on making sure the rent stays near MVR 6,000.
