President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that Luthufee is the biggest traitor the country has seen and even with the power to show clemency and release him, it would not be done. President Solih said that Luthufee must serve out his sentence.
The President made the statement at an ongoing press conference.
He added that he had never met Luthufee in person before, and that he would have to go back to jail to serve his sentence.
Furthermore, President Solih revealed that he had voluntarily presented himself to the Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka on May 1. Since then, the focus has been on not letting him flee again and to bring him back to the Maldives. However, this was during the time when Lanka was hit by a series of bomb attacks, effectively hindering the works on transferring Luthufee back to the Maldives.
President Solih also refuted the opposition’s claims of having to pay about MVR 2 million to bring Luthufee back, but asserted that any money that was required to be paid will be done so by the state.
