Finance Minister Moosa Zameer has announced plans to expand gas storage capacity in the Greater Malé region by an additional 1,500 tonnes.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister Zameer said that State Trading Organization (STO) is leading the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once finished, the Maldives will be able to maintain up to two and a half months of gas reserves in the Malé region.

Currently, STO operates with a storage capacity of 1,000 tonnes. The expansion comes as gas shipments have increased in recent weeks due to rising demand.

Minister Zameer added that there are no current challenges in importing gas, but boosting storage capacity is a key step toward strengthening the country’s energy security.
