Former Islamic Minister, Dr. Ahmed Ziyad has raised a government the current administration asking if the Islamic University of the Maldives (IUM) being moved under the Maldives National University (MNU) as a means to reform the IUM.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Ziyad asked if it was under any reform policy that the government is preparing to “slay” the symbol of Islamic honor on Maldivian soil. He said that voices are being raised today calling to close the IUM.

He said that it is an institute that has created love in the hearts of the people and noted that the Institute for Islamic Studies, “Mauhad” was also closed in 2009. Dr. Ziyad said that attempts were made at a time to close the Islamic studies, Kulliyah.

After the parliament debate on moving the IUM under MNU yesterday, Adhaalath Party too raised concerns and protested the move.

In a statement released last night, Adhaalath Party said that it is important to have the IUM as an institute that researches Islamic studies spread the faith.
