Gaafu Alif Atoll Council has said that the development of a resort in GA. Odegalla will affect the surrounding environment and fishing in the region.
The council voiced their opinions in a statement issued on Sunday. As such, they noted that Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had previously stated that Odegalla was a sensitive region and highlighted the importance it held for regional fishing.
Odegalla is famous as a seabird habitat and also frequented by fishermen in search for bait. The house reef that encircles the island is also quite rich in its natural beauty.
The council had also thanked President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Tourism Minister Ali Waheed for bringing a stop to the resort development works in the island.
