Reports have said that the officers at the Maafushi Prison are refusing to enter the cells or bring inmates to Male’ City for treatments.
It has been reported the prison officers refused to do these things and began protesting after an investigation was launched against them following the riot on Thursday.
Home Minister, Imran Abdulla and the Commissioner General of Prisons, Abdulla Munaz said that seven inmates were injured during Thursday’s riot.
The Commissioner of Prisons said that a correctional officer, too, was injured in the incident that took place at Unit 4 which is used as a remand jail and it is being investigated.
Sources have said that the officers are protesting against entering the Unit 4 in question stating that officers are not safe there.
Maldives Correctional Service has officially denied that any such protest is taking place at the prison. The Media Officer of the Correctional Service, Ahmed Naseem said that all the officers are on their shifts and all operations are running as normal. He said that there are no issues at the prison and no protest by the correctional officers.
Attempts to contact the Media Official at the Home Ministry for a word has been unsuccessful as they are not responding to calls.
Correctional Service has previously said that the situation at the Maafushi Prison escalated after excessive force was used by some officers injuring six inmates.
