Elections Commission (EC) President Mohamed Zahid has stated that there are no current plans to introduce electronic voting in the Maldives.
Speaking during a parliamentary committee session, Zahid explained that although e-voting could potentially reduce costs, the EC has opted to maintain the existing voting system due to the high level of public confidence it enjoys. He emphasised that trust in the electoral process is the most important factor in any election, and that the Maldivian public continues to have faith in the current system.
Zahid also noted that even if the law were amended to mandate electronic voting, implementing such a change would be challenging. He added that any future move towards e-voting should involve close consultation with political parties to help ensure public trust in the new system.
