Inmates in Male' Prison have begun a riot after learning that the inmates injured during the beatings in Maafushi Prison last Thursday will not be brought for medical treatment.
Speaking during the emergency meeting of the Parliament Committee on National Security, South Macchangolhi MP Ahmed Haitham said that they have received reports which claim that the inmates injured during the incident has not been given medical treatment. He added that the news has already spread to Male' Prison, were inmates have begun a riot demanding for the injured to be given medical treatment immediately.
MP Haitham requested the Committee to complete their investigation at the earliest possible and to advise the administration on taking measures to resolve the issue at hand. He further stressed that escalating matters poses the risk of hunger strikes in prisons as well.
However, Maldives Correctional Service denied any such activities in Himmafushi Prison and Male' Prison.
