Home Minister Imran Abdulla on Saturday visited Maafushi Prison, after prison riots broke out as a result of inmates being beaten up by prison officers.

Home Ministry confirmed that Minister Imran's trip to Maafushi Prison were regarding the escalating prison riots, in an attempt to get to the bottom of the situation. The Ministry additionally revealed that the Minister met with senior officials during the visit.

The Minister was accompanied by Commissioner General of Prisons Abdulla Munaz and senior officials of the Ministry.

Home Ministry has said that excessive force was used to regain control of the situation in the prison last Thursday, and added that the government will not stand for torture of inmates. The Parliament Committee on National Security is also set to convene regarding the matter on Saturday afternoon.
