Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj has revealed that inmates in prison were beaten after they were cuffed and blindfolded.

MP Siraj confirmed through a tweet that he has learned about the prison beatings from first hand witness accounts. He added that the culture of prison torture still exists and that such things could only be stopped by finding the perpetrators, holding them accountable for their actions and taking necessary steps against them.

Home Minister Imran Abdulla previously said that no action will be taken against prison officers without a full and proper investigation and added that political leveraging through prison riots are a thing of the past.

The Minister stressed the need to penalise those who are responsible for the prison beatings.

Minister Imran had travelled to Maafushi Prison on Saturday, and gathered information on the riots first hand.
