The Parliament Committee on National Security has scheduled an emergency meeting for Saturday afternoon, regarding the protests in Maafushi Prison.

The National Security Committee is holding a meeting regarding the escalating prison riots which were triggered after a scuffle between a prison officer and an inmate last Thursday, leaving the officer with several injuries and being treated at IGMH.

Inmates in two cells were injured in the riot on Thursday. Five inmates were injured after they were beaten after being handcuffed at the back and pushed to the floor. Sources have said that the inmates were targeted with pepper spray to their back and groin area.

Head of Committee Ibrahim Shareef said that the National Security Committee will convene at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon.

Regarding the situation, the Media Officer of the Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Naseem told One Online that he is unaware that there is a situation developing in the prison and officers are not preparing with riot gear.

Correctional Service denied that any riot took place in prison yesterday. But did say that an officer was brought to Male’ City for treatment after being injured by an inmate.

Later, Home Ministry said that an investigation is underway after the correctional Service had used excessive force to control the riot.
