Inmates have started protesting at Maafushi Prison after the inmates are being refused to let out of their cells for medical treatment after the prison riot yesterday.
One Online has learned that inmates are calling to provide treatment for the injured inmate. Videos of the protest have also leaked on social media.
Inmates in two cells were injured in the riot yesterday. Five inmates were injured after they were beaten after being handcuffed at the back and pushed to the floor. Sources have said that the inmates were targeted with pepper spray to their back and groin area.
While protests have been going on for a while at Unit 4 where the riot took place, Correctional Officers are preparing to enter the cells with riot gear according to sources.
Regarding the situation, the Media Officer of the Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Naseem told One Online that he is unaware that there is a situation developing in the prison and officers are not preparing with riot gear.
Correctional Service denied that any riot took place in prison yesterday. But did say that an officer was brought to Male’ City for treatment after being injured by an inmate.
Later, Home Ministry later said that an investigation is underway after the correctional Service had used excessive force to control the riot.
The official Twitter account of the parliament tweeted saying that the parliament committee on human rights would begin looking into the cause of the riots at the meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow.
