Housing Minister Dr. Abdullah Muttalib has announced that the government has decided to begin inspecting social housing units as soon as possible, in collaboration with relevant authorities, to check if they have been rented out.
This statement comes after reports emerged yesterday of some beneficiaries attempting to rent out their newly allocated flats at high prices.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today, the Minister said that as these social housing units are provided at subsidized rates using public funds, the government does not approve of renting them out at high prices or using them for purposes other than the beneficiary's own residence.
Consequently, the government has decided to terminate agreements and reclaim units that have been rented out contrary to the agreements or are occupied by people other than the beneficiaries.
"This ministry is working to start inspecting social housing units in collaboration with relevant authorities as soon as possible," the Minister said.
In his post, the Minister also highlighted key points from the agreement between Gedhoruverin Scheme beneficiaries and the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC).
According to this agreement, beneficiaries are prohibited from renting out the units to others. If such a complaint is received, FDC has the authority to investigate and take action.
