Some recipients of government housing scheme flats have begun advertising their apartments for rent at prices much higher than their actual value.
Just a week after the flats were officially handed over, several listings appeared on social media and online marketplaces offering the units for rent at around MVR 25,000 per month.
The government-set rent for the flats ranges between MVR 8,000 and MVR 10,500 monthly. The sharp increase in asking prices has drawn criticism from the public, with many arguing that such practices undermine the purpose of social housing initiatives aimed at providing affordable accommodation.
Critics say that turning subsidised housing into a profit-making venture defeats the government’s efforts to address the housing shortage and makes it harder for low- and middle-income families to secure homes.
Similar incidents have previously been reported with Hiyaa flats, where recipients also rented out their units for high prices soon after receiving them.
Authorities have not yet commented on whether any action will be taken against those found to be violating the terms of the housing scheme.
