A constitutional amendment has been submitted to the People’s Majlis seeking to deduct the salaries of cabinet ministers who fail to submit their annual wealth statements on time.
The amendment to Article 138 of the Constitution was proposed by North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim. It aims to strengthen accountability by making it mandatory for all cabinet members to disclose their assets, financial accounts, business interests, liabilities, and debts to both the Auditor General and the Parliament.
Under the proposed changes, ministers must submit their wealth statements within 90 days after completing a year in office, with the documents verified by a licensed auditor. Failure to comply would result in daily salary deductions until the statement is submitted.
The bill also requires new ministers to submit their initial wealth statements within 30 days of appointment. Furthermore, the Auditor General would be required to publish the submitted statements publicly.
If passed, the amendment would tighten financial disclosure rules for ministers and increase transparency regarding their personal assets and business interests.
