A motion has been file to summon the Home Minister, Sheikh Imran Abdulla to the parliament regarding the issue of Abdula Luthufee (H. Haajaraage) who was convicted for his involvement in the invasion of the Maldives on 3 November 1988, who his in hiding in Sri Lanka.
The motion for quetioning was filed by the MP for Nolhivaraum constituency, Mohamed Nasheed.
Led by Luthufee, armed mercenaries from Sri Lanka attempted a coup d’état in the Maldives and invaded the capital on 3 November 1988 killing 19 locals.
After the failed coup, he was sentenced to death for treason before then President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom showed clemency and turned his sentence to life in prison.
Luthufee fled the authorities during the Presidency of Mohamed Nasheed after going to Sri Lanka for medical treatment.
