All operations of Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL), which previously managed domestic airports, have been transferred to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
MACL's Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed told "One" today that MACL took over the management of nine airports operated by RACL two weeks ago.
Shareef said that when they took over these airports, the condition was very poor.
"Some airports' fire trucks were damaged. There are many maintenance issues to address. Some equipment needs to be purchased. There are also some items that need to be manufactured and imported upon order. What we're doing now is conducting a full inspection and working on completing the inventory," Shareef said.
Shareef stated that transferring the airports to MACL would reduce costs. He also said that the condition of the airports would be improved within the next six months.
The government decided to merge the Regional Airports Company with MACL last September.
