MP for Hulhu-Heneiru constituency, Hassan Latheef, on the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee, has said that the people will have the last word and behalf of the people, the last work will be from the parliament.
He made the remark during the Committee debate in response to MP Ali Hussain who said that the parliament does not have the authority to support the JSC after the JSC decision to disobey the Supreme Court regarding the JSC suspension of the Supreme Court Judge, Abdulla Didi.
Opposing the JSC decision, MP Hussain said that parliament does not have the authority to bring in and debate the decisions of independent institutes. And if that happens, the parliament will be turned in to a court He said that the parliament cannot work above the Constitution and the parliament too has to work within it.
In response, MP Hassan Latheef said that it is in the parliament’s mandate to make sure the independent institutes remain independent. And when the JSC members were brought in, it was clear that the JSC is being influenced by the Supreme Court and the parliament is the only institute responsible to bring it to light.
