The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced that members interested in contesting the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections on the party’s ticket may now submit their applications.

In a press release issued on Friday, the party said that members may express their interest from today until Tuesday, 30 September. Only those who apply within this period will be eligible to participate in the party’s primaries, the timeline for which will be announced later.

Applicants must be registered MDP members and fulfil all requirements outlined in Section 12 of the Local Bodies Elections Act. Candidates for the WDC elections must also meet the conditions set under Rule 8 of the Women’s Development Committee Rules.

MDP stated that those wishing to contest should submit their applications through a designated Google form, along with verification documents confirming they have no criminal or debt records, cleared by the Department of Judicial Administration.

The party further noted that the distribution of seats for cities and the allocation of seats for women has been carried out in line with current practice, but adjustments may be made if directed by the Elections Commission.
