Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel has criticised the conduct of some journalists protesting against the Media Commission Bill, accusing them of insulting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Journalists have been demonstrating against the bill, arguing that it threatens press freedom. Protestors followed President Dr Muizzu all the way to Muliaage today, voicing concern over the bill.

In a video message shared on X, Minister Dr Khaleel questioned whether it was appropriate for journalists seeking to defend rights to mock the head of state. He also raised concerns over individuals he described as “wearing the tag of journalism” allegedly defaming people, targeting families, and causing distress to children.

Minister Dr Khaleel further questioned whether journalists themselves were in a position to regulate the press.

The protests continue as journalists demand changes to the bill.
