Speaker of Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that there were no means to rehabilitate returning Jihadists who have taken part in foreign wars.
Speaking during a press conference in Sri Lanka with a high level delegation that includes Vice President Faisal Naseem, President Nasheed stated that he does not wish to bring back Maldivian jihadists who have been part of foreign wars. He stressed that due to the lack of rehabilitation facilities for such jihadists, it would be better for them to be first rehabilitated before they are brought back to the country.
He highlighted that the issue of radicalised jihadists was a threat that the international community faces, and that a solution for it should also be brought by everyone.
President Nasheed also revealed that the government was closely monitoring the situation, since a number of Maldivians travel to Middle Eastern countries such as Syria to take part in their wars.
