The Directorate of Aviation Security Administration (DASA) Division of the Ministry of Defence has begun inspections to test and authorize the use of security systems at the new terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA).
The Ministry of Defence said that the testing of security systems is planned to be carried out systematically in different sections, in collaboration with MACL, in accordance with the National Civil Aviation Security Program standards.
They have already inspected and tested the terminal's access control and CCTV systems.
In the coming days, baggage screening trial sessions will be conducted to test the hold baggage screening and baggage handling systems installed for aviation security work. The ministry also said that other equipment installed for aviation security work will be tested.
Additionally, the ministry stated that they will review and authorize the SOPs for using the equipment, access control system, and CCTV system installed in the terminal.
MACL is preparing to open the new VIA terminal on the 26th of this month, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of Maldives' independence.
The new terminal project was awarded to Saudi Binladin Group, who subcontracted it to China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC). The new terminal is estimated to cost USD 600 million.
Designed to serve seven million passengers annually, the new terminal is described as a modern facility that will solve VIA's space constraints and improve services for travelers. MACL has stated that the terminal is designed to symbolize the beauty, history, and culture of the Maldives.
The 72,000 square foot terminal will feature 47 check-in counters, six self-service kiosks, a modern baggage handling system, and an advanced security screening system.
